Bio
Jacob grew up in a small Javanese village in Solo, Indonesia, to an Indonesian–Australian father and an Israeli–American mother. From an early age, he was immersed in the regal sounds of the Javanese gamelan. He began playing piano at the age of five and soon became involved in the local jazz community, travelling between cities to study with a wide range of teachers. His musical journey in Indonesia culminated in a performance at the 2019 Ubud Village International Jazz Festival, where he led his own trio at just fourteen years old.
In 2020, Jacob moved to Australia to study at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School, where he studied with Dr Steve Barry, Dr Kevin Hunt, and the late Judy Bailey OAM. During this time, he was also introduced to the Western classical tradition, undertaking studies in percussion and composition. He has since continued his tertiary studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he was awarded the John and Dorothy Vimpani Pianoforte Fund.
Since 2023, Jacob has studied the Taubman Approach under the guidance of certified Golandsky Institute Instructor Anthony Van Den Broek. This work has enabled him to overcome playing-related injuries and develop a technique that allows for greater freedom, control, and expressive clarity. During this period, he completed both his Associate and Licentiate Diplomas (AMEB) and continues to deepen his engagement with the Western classical piano canon.
Jacob’s musical identity reflects his eclectic upbringing, drawing on American and Australian jazz traditions, Javanese gamelan, Western classical repertoire, and 17th-century Baroque partimento practice. He is deeply committed to the ongoing pursuit of his craft, continually refining his voice as a pianist and musician.
